IISER Pune offers BS-MS dual degree, Integrated PhD, and PhD programs. Areas of research include Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Climate Science, Humanities & Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics. Let us talk about these Programmes in detail one by one.

1. BS-MS Programme:

BS-MS is the flagship programme of IISERs. BS-MS is a short form for Bachelor of Science, Master of Science. It is a 5-year dual degree program science students who have passed class XII. The defining feature of the education it imparts, is that the undergraduate students have the opportunity to combine formal learning in the classroom with practical learning via research projects in state-of-the-art laboratories. This model for undergraduate learning, in which students learn how to carry out meaningful, curiosity-based research at an early stage leads to the students becoming more motivated and innovative in their research activities.

Under this 5-year long programme, basic training in Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Climate Science, Mathematics, and Physics is imparted in the first two years. In the next two years, students can choose courses offered by one or more departments according to their liking and future career perspective. The fifth-year is allocated to a research project or an internship, leading to a thesis.

2.Ph.D. Programme

IISER Pune Ph.D. Programme

Ph.D. students are the main driving force in the research Programmes at IISER. The Ph.D. programme has a year-long coursework before the research work begins.

The Ph.D. programme started in 2007, one year after the establishment of the Institute. It is a 5-year programme open for students with M.Sc. or B. Tech degrees. Besides, IISER actively encourage research initiatives that span multiple disciplines. Over the last 13 years, IISER Pune has established a brand value that has attracted large numbers of talented students to the institute, from all parts of the country. In addition to writing their Ph.D. thesis, Ph.D. students contribute to the majority of the research publications from the institute. The MHRD has recently included the IISERs in the group of institutes where Ph.D. students can compete for and hold the Prime Minister’s Research Fellowships. Admission to Ph.D. Programmes at the Institute is through national-level tests followed by interviews conducted separately for each department.

3. Integrated Ph.D. Programme(iPhD)

IISER Pune IPh.D. programme

The Integrated Ph.D. programme(iPhD) offers students with a bachelor’s degree in science a head-start in identifying an area of research leading to a Ph.D. The Integrated Ph.D. programme established in 2011 is aimed at highly motivated students who wish to pursue a career in research. It is offered in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics, the programme begins with a 1.5–2 years of coursework followed by research.

This is a 6 years course combining masters and doctorate degree into a single integrated programme. A student joining the iPhD is expected to save 1 year  (MS + Ph.D.), as compared to a Ph.D. student. Admission is through national-level tests followed by interviews conducted separately for each department.

4. Post Doctoral

Post Doctoral Programmes

Postdoctoral Research Associate (PRA) position is open to pursue additional research, training, or teaching  to have better skills to pursue a career in academia or research fields. PRA positions are available in all the disciplines. Candidates with research experience can apply for these positions.

There are total 60 questions, 15 each in Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology. For each correct answer +3 marks are awarded and for incorrect answer penalty of 1 mark (i.e. -1 marks) is given. Zero mark is awarded for not answering the question. The maximum marks of the test are 180.

For BS-MS Programme: The total number of seats is 200, out of this 50% of seats will be filled through aptitude tests whereas remaining through KVPY and JEE Channel.

For Ph.D. Programme: Number of seats depends on the stream you’re applying to. The maximum number of seats is in Biology. In Maths, they usually take in the minimum number of students, while in Physics and Chemistry, it is usually intermediate. There isn’t any fixed number of seats though, in either of the streams. There are two rounds of interviews and depending upon performance in the interview final selection is made.
